Welcome to a web page for Steve Herschbach.
I have been prospecting and metal detecting for over 50 years, starting with pan and sluice box, and progressing to suction dredges. Suction dredging kept me busy for many years, and I have used every size dredge from the tiny 1.5" on up to massive 8" units. From there I progressed to mining claims and bulldozers, and eventually hard rock (lode) exploration. I have owned many mining claims over the years, and currently still have claims in Alaska. Metal detecting is something that started with me as a hobby looking for coins in 1972. Detectors improved vastly over the years and are now a very important part of my prospecting methodology. I am considered an expert on the use of metal detectors in general and electronic prospecting in particular.
I co-founded a small scale mining store in 1976, Alaska Mining & Diving Supply, Inc. It evolved into one of the largest recreational power equipment suppliers in the country. As an owner of a retail business for 40 years I developed some fine-tuned marketing skills. I wore many hats but the two I enjoyed most was being the company information technology guy plus my continued involvement in the prospecting and metal detecting side of the business. I am retired now from AMDS and dabble in prospecting, writing, metal detector consulting, and website designing.
I used to write for ICMJ's Prospecting & Mining Journal. I also had a blog on the Minelab website - Steve Herschbach at Treasure Talk
